Holidays At The Indian Ocean

Maldives

For some people, holidays to the Indian Ocean conjure up idyllic islands with white-sand beaches, crystal clear waters and hours spent relaxing on the beach. For others, it conjures up dreams of scuba diving, snorkeling and trekking adventures to discover hidden jungle waterfalls. The islands of the Indian Ocean – including the Maldives, Mauritius and Sri Lanka – offer all of this and more.

Mauritius holidays are filled with adventures and activities like scuba diving, island tours and hiking. Mauritius is known for great hiking; 75% of the island is covered in mountains and there are many hiking trails to choose from. A fun all-day hike is the trail to Tamarind Falls. This will take you through forests and down steep canyons to enjoy a refreshing swim at the bottom where seven falls meet. There are many Mauritius hotels around the island ranging from simple to fancy, as well as several charming Bed and Breakfast Inns.

The Maldives are formed by two chains of 26 atolls and include 1,192 islands. Because there is more water than land, this is a fantastic place to snorkel or dive. Nalaguraidhoo is one of the best snorkelling/scuba diving islands in the Maldives. The barrier reef is so close in spots that you can wade over to it. You do not even have to get into the water to observe the reef, it can be seen from the beach in many areas.

It’s worth getting into the water, however, because of the abundant marine life. Tropical fish swarm around you in water that is crystal clear. Many hotels have stunning views on these beautiful islands. Many are right on the beach and some Maldives hotels are actually on the water.

The Dambulla Cave Temple in Sri Lanka is a sight to see. More than 80 caves are situated here with 5 of them containing statues and temples, mostly relating to the life of Buddha. Among other treasures, the caves hold 153 Buddha statues and a mural covering 2,100 square meters. Burial sites in the caves hold human skeletons 2700 years old. Also known as the Golden Temple of Dambulla, this was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991 which is a good reason to think about Sri Lanka holidays.

Water sports, trekking and spelunking among ancient treasure are just some of the things holidays to the Indian Ocean will offer you. Take your next holiday on one of these beautiful islands and create memories you can hold for a lifetime.
