Air Travel – How To Get Cheap Air Tickets

Money Matters

With planning, foresight and a little bit of hard work, you can go ahead and book your flight for that dream vacation the economical way. Here are some suggestions:

* Search the internet, call airline agencies and watch the news to keep yourself up to date on discounts. There are a lot of promotional fares offered by airline companies that are new in the industry.

* When you do travel a lot, sign up for frequent flier miles.

* Ask about student fares or senior citizen discounts.

* Keep a flexible travel schedule. Go with the flow. If the promo states that they only give discounts every Tuesdays, then set your departure on Tuesday. Generally, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays are the days that have fewer reservations, so it is on these days that tickets are sold cheap. Monday is usually the busiest day of the week.

* Do not jump on the first deal you see. Take the time to source out a variety of options. Take the time to find out if the promotion is indeed the cheapest in your area. Ask the clerk about other offers available. When checking through the internet, make sure you check at least five sites before you decide where to buy your tickets.

* Look at purchasing tickets through ticket consolidators. These are people who buy a whole block of tickets and resell them at certain discounts. This helps the airline fill up still-available seats. The travel section of the newspaper is the place to check for ticket consolidators.

* Try flying during off peak hours. Usually if you take the ‘before seven in the morning’ flight or the ‘after seven in the evening’ flight, tickets are at their cheapest. This too, will be a wise decision since it is at these times that airlines are not overcrowded, thus getting more space for yourself and your luggage.

* Be sure to inquire if the airline offers travel packages. Some airlines do offer packages such as car rental discount or a hotel room discount that comes with the travel ticket.

* When you are flying off season, ask about standby fares.

* Have an early booking. Promotions are usually offered when one reserves a ticket three weeks beforehand. Remember that due to over crowding during the holidays, you may not be able to use your frequent flier miles. So book in advance if you plan to travel during the holidays.

* Using one airline on your entire trip may also cost less. Airlines offer special rates to round trip tickets or connecting flights.

Now, go save some money, have a safe trip and enjoy your vacation!

Yup try priceline.com and use name your own price. You bid on tickets and destinations and an airline can accept it, much cheaper than using the reservation system. Only downfall is you cant cancel and you cant pick the airline, but you asked for cheap and its the cheapest!!

Depends where to want to fly from and to. In the UK the biggest travel aggregators are: Flight centre, Travel supermarket, opodo, and expedia. You can also try thomson. If you’re travelling in Europe then look up BMI, easyjet and ryan air. Booking a fortnight in advance will usually get you very very cheap deals. Good luck.

fly standby at the airline of your choice if your flexible, plus if the plane has empty seats you can upgrade for free. IE: first class and etc.(I’ve gotten up to 80% off!)

Listen to Scott, standby discounts from your working company is the cheapest. all ya gotta do is send them a notice so they can send a notice to the airlines for a standby ticket.

BUT, you can’t always rely on that ticket. I went to LAX (los angeles intrnl. airport) and I had to wait for 2 whole days with NO sleep for a spot on the plane!! Standby is not so reliable, especially if your heading to somewhere where the airport is so busy.

So if your willing to go through that, then good luck!

  8. It can go two ways, booking far in advance can help cut costs, but if the destination is not very popular, then waiting till the last minute can save you even more because the carrier is desperate to fill their plane.

  9. If you already know when you have to go then just bid for the flight in advance and this is the best way to be sure that you will be getting a good deal. Simply put in the arrival and departure information, number of layovers that are acceptable and the maximum amount willing to be paid for the ticket. Then place the bid and within a few hours the bidder will be notified if an airline accepts the bid or not.

Thanks for your comment, Tim. It does seem that booking last minute is becoming a popular strategy for saving money. It’s true for airfare and cruises.

    Thanks for coming in!
